How to Obtain a Canadian Business Visa

How to Obtain a Canadian Business Visa

A Canadian business visa is not automatically granted to foreigners wishing to conduct business in Canada. In fact, obtaining one requires a great deal of planning and preparation.

In this post, we outline the steps that will ensure that you get this essential Canadian visa for conducting business in the country—quickly and easily. We cover what documents you’ll need, how to fill out your application form, where to submit it, and finally how long it will take for your application to be processed. Ready? Let’s get started!

What documents are required for a Canadian business visa?

Applications for a Canadian business visa must include the following documents:

1) An application form

2) A passport valid for at least six months after you plan to leave Canada. It must have at least one empty page. If it doesn’t, you may have to renew it first. It’s best to submit your application as soon as your passport is ready. You can apply up to three months before the expiry date of your current passport.

3) Two visa-size photographs, along with a copy of the photo on your passport. Photocopy both sides of the photo on your passport.

4) A letter from a Canadian company stating that it is willing to employ you and cover the cost of your business visa application. The letter should also specify the nature of the job, salary/remuneration, and duration of employment.

5) A letter from a bank in Canada confirming the availability of at least C$50,000 to fund your stay in Canada. You must produce this letter before you will be granted a visa. If you do not, immigration authorities will consider you a ‘low-risk traveler’ and not require a security deposit.

6) A letter from the Canadian embassy or consulate explaining why you are applying for a business visa. Just like your bank letter, this should be written before you submit your application.

7) Proof of your financial ability to support yourself during the duration of your stay in Canada (i.e., proof that you have at least C$50,000 in cash or liquid assets). This is usually done through an affidavit of support (see below for format).

8) If applicable, proof of any criminal record if this was not already stated on the application form, e.g., police report, mug shot, etc.

9) Your completed application form and supporting documents, together with a copy of your passport and one blank visa form.

10) The fee of C$145, which is payable in full at the time of submitting the application. This can be paid by certified cheque, money order, cashier’s check or travelers’ cheques made payable to the ‘Embassy of Canada’. If you intend to use a credit card to pay for your business visa application online, you can apply for a pre-paid Visa gift card or Embassy Visa gift card through your bank.
